Hamish Fulton is a British walking artist, who has been making works based on the experience of individual walks since 1972. Arguing that “walking is an art form in its own right,” Fulton translates his walks into photographs, drawings and wall texts. Although only Fulton himself experiences the walk itself, his works allow the beholder to engage with his experience. In the past, his walks have had him travel extensively to more than 25 countries around the world, covering more than 12,000 miles.

Hamish Fulton (b. 1946, London, UK) lives and works in Canterbury. His work has been shown extensively around the world. Important solo exhibitions include Turner Contemporary (2012), Museion (2005), Tate Britain (2002), Museu Serralves (2001), Serpentine Gallery (1991), Stedelijk van Abbemuseum (1985), Centre Georges Pompidou (1981), Kunstmuseum Basel (1975) and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (1973). Major group exhibitions include Documenta (1977; 1982), the Bienal de Arte Paiz in Guatemala City (2016), Schaulager, Basel (2015), MOCA, Los Angeles (2012), Royal Academy of Arts, London (2011), CAPC – Musée d’art contemporain, Bordeaux (2002), Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney (2000) and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2000).

A walk has a life of its own and does not need to be materialised into an artwork. An artwork may be purchased but a walk cannot be sold.
